Yoaz Hendel is an Israeli politician, author, and military officer who served as Minister of Communications from 2020 to 2022 and as a member of the Knesset. He is a lieutenant colonel in the reserves, founded the Miluimnikim Movement, holds a doctorate in history from Tel Aviv University, and authored several books on Israeli security and society. Before entering politics, he worked in the Prime Minister's Office, served as a lecturer at Bar-Ilan University, and was a columnist for major Israeli newspapers.
Hendel was born in Petah Tikva in 1975 and raised in Elkana, Samaria, in a religious-nationalist household. He enlisted in the IDF in 1993 and volunteered for Shayetet 13, completing commando training and serving as team commander and company commander for six and a half years. After his military service, he continued working in security positions including in the Shin Bet during the Second Intifada, and later earned his doctorate in history focusing on intelligence methods in the ancient world.
Hendel was raised in a religious-nationalist household but decided to stop wearing a kippah during high school and became secular. He serves as a battalion commander in the reserves and founded the Omer Unit in 2015, a special reserve command unit composed of veterans from elite units. During the Iron Swords War, he commanded Battalion 8555 after returning to active reserve duty following his time in politics.
