Teyana Taylor was born to Nikki Taylor and Tito Smith in Harlem, New York, and is of African American and Trinidadian descent. At age 15 in September 2006, Taylor choreographed Beyoncé's "Ring the Alarm" music video and signed with Pharrell Williams' Star Trak Entertainment in January 2007, launching her journey from Harlem dancer to multi-platform entertainer.
Teyana Taylor married NBA player Iman Shumpert on October 1, 2016, approximately two weeks after revealing their relationship on The Wendy Williams Show on September 20, 2016. In 2015, Shumpert delivered their first child himself when Taylor went into premature labor, and in June 2020, Taylor confirmed her second pregnancy in the music video for "Wake Up Love." Her mother Nikki Taylor serves as her manager and played a central role in her upbringing, while her father Tito Smith has three other children from a different relationship.
Her husband Iman Shumpert delivered their first baby at home in 2015 when she went into premature labor.
She directed music videos for herself and other artists before making her feature directorial debut with Get Lite for Paramount Pictures.
As a Sagittarius born December 10, she embodies the sign's adventurous and multi-talented nature across music, dance, acting, and directing.
She won first place on season seven of The Masked Singer in 2022 performing as "Firefly."
She was named one of Time's 2026 Women of the Year for her contributions to entertainment and culture.
At the time it was pretty empty, just verses. [Kanye West] put me in another room by myself and said, 'Go.' I came back with the intro and chorus, did all the scratches and the cuts myself.
I was nervous upon letting Kanye hear my contributions to the tracks, trying to cover my nervousness by stating that I hadn't been in the studio for so long.
