Television talent show judge and music mogul
He became famous as the brutally honest judge on talent competition shows including American Idol, The X Factor, and Britain's Got Talent, known for his cutting critiques and signature phrase "I don't mean to be rude, but..."
Simon Cowell is an English television personality, record executive, and entertainment mogul who revolutionized talent competitions. Born October 7, 1959, he built a global empire through talent shows including Pop Idol, The X Factor, Britain's Got Talent, and American Idol, earning recognition as one of Time's 100 most influential people. His company Syco Entertainment has launched careers for One Direction, Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle, and Little Mix, while his brutally honest judging style made him one of television's most recognizable figures.
Simon Cowell grew up in Elstree, Hertfordshire, the son of music executive Eric Cowell and ballet dancer Julie Brett, attending Dover College before leaving after his O levels. He started at the bottom of the music industry working in the mailroom at EMI Music Publishing, a job his father secured for him after Cowell struggled with various menial positions. He spent the 1980s building experience as a record producer and talent agent, founding Fanfare Records in 1983 and scoring his first hit with Sinitta's "So Macho" in 1986, though the company collapsed in 1989 leaving him nearly bankrupt.
Simon Cowell is not married but has been in a long-term relationship with American socialite Lauren Silverman since 2013, and they became engaged in January 2022. Their son Eric, named after Cowell's late father, was born in February 2014. In August 2020, Cowell suffered a serious back injury from an electric bike accident at his Malibu home, requiring surgery and months of recovery that temporarily sidelined him from America's Got Talent.
