Ilia Malinin, born December 2, 2004, in Fairfax, Virginia, is an American figure skater who made history as the first person to land a fully rotated quadruple Axel in international competition. He is a three-time World champion (2024, 2025, 2026), four-time U.S. national champion (2023,2026), and 2026 Olympic team event gold medalist. Standing 5'8" and nicknamed "Quad God," he holds world records for the men's free skate and comes from a family of Olympic skaters.
Malinin was born to former Olympic figure skaters Tatiana Malinina and Roman Skorniakov, who both competed for Uzbekistan after representing Russia. His mother won the 1999 Grand Prix Final and finished eighth at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, while his father competed in two Olympics (1998, 2002). He began skating at age six in 2011 under his parents' coaching in Reston, Virginia, and his younger sister Liza also competes in figure skating.
Malinin is not married and maintains a private personal life focused on his skating career. He graduated from George C. Marshall High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, in 2023 and attends George Mason University. Fluent in both English and Russian, he was named to Time magazine's Time 100 Next List in September 2022 and maintains an active presence on Instagram, TikTok, and Twitch.

His maternal grandfather Valery Malinin is a former Soviet Union competitor and skating coach in Novosibirsk, Russia.
