Del Toro was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico to lawyer parents. His mother died of hepatitis when he was 9 years old. At 15, he moved to Pennsylvania and attended Mercersburg Academy before studying business at UC San Diego, where an elective drama course led him to drop out and pursue acting with Stella Adler in Los Angeles.
Del Toro has a daughter named Delilah, born August 21, 2011, with fashion designer Kimberly Stewart, daughter of Rod Stewart, though they never married. He holds both American and Spanish citizenship, receiving Spanish citizenship in November 2011 due to his family heritage. His older brother Gustavo is executive vice president and chief medical officer at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn.
